« SZYMANOWSKI AND UKRAINE »

On 18 January 2000 the National Philharmonics of Ukraine will see a unique soiree dedicated to Karol Szimanowski, the great Polish composer of the early 20th century. K.Szymanowski is the brightest star in the constellation of both Polish and Ukrainian culture. His music is peculiar and full of color. It is genuinely romantic and exquisitely lyrical, which for over a hundred years has amazed and inspired the audiences of true music lovers of the most renowned philharmonic halls throughout the world. The Kiev music lovers and arts amateurs will have a rare opportunity to hear all of K.Szymanowski's chamber pieces: the only sonata for the violin and the piano; amazingly colorful the "Three Myths, "Paganini Caprices" and the Violin Concerto No. 1.         More...

« UKRAINIAN WATERCOLORS – 20 TH ANNIVERSARY. D.D. SHOSTAKOVICH »

It is not by chance that we have decided to celebrate the 20th anniversary of "The Ukrainian Watercolors" preparing such a profound philosophical program, which includes the Music by Dmitri Shostakovich. His music, which truly represents an epoch in the world culture, is by no means an aesthete's attraction, an entertainment of the day. It stirs our souls and hearts, addresses the mind. The eternal contents of his works is the question of the essence of being; how we live and pass away; what we leave after ourselves. These issues have been conceptually important both for the audiences and the performers over several generations.

« DEDICATED TO THE MEMORY OF THE HOLOCAUST VICTIMS »

On 3 July 2003 Kiev musicians addressed the theme of Holocaust. The National Philharmonic Hall of Columns was the site of the concert in memory of Holocaust victims, initiated by Edward Idelchuk, a co-founder of The Ukrainian Watercolors chamber ensemble, who presently works in Finland. Conceived quite spontaneously of works of classical and contemporary composers devoted to the Jewish theme, the concert was not dedicated to any anniversary, although the mention of the tragedy is generally avoided, except for anniversaries. The Philharmonic Hall does not frequently address such themes either. Meanwhile, the program, which includes The Sonata by A.Schnittke, S.Prokofiev's Ouverture on Jewish Themes, Kadish by M.Ravel, as well as J.Williams' theme to "The Schindler List" film and Gerschwin's Berceuse, deserves the audience's attention.         More...
